A piece of hardware which is added to the host computer which implies any hardware other than computer to enhance its abilities is called as a computer peripheral. Precisely, computer peripherals are those devices which are not necessary and are optional just opposite to the hardware which is always required or demanded. Computer peripherals can also be defined as devices which are connected externally through a computer bus like USB. The best and most famous examples include printers, joysticks, and scanners. At times, devices like disk drives and monitors are not considered to be computer peripherals specifically when they are not optional. Some devices like video capture cards which are installed into the computer case are not considered peripherals by some.
This is because for some people peripherals basically are devices which are connected externally to the computer. But this I not absolutely right since some cards like Wifi cards, unlike PCMCIA cards which go totally into the laptop, have external appendages. Peripherals may not be necessary devices but they do have an important application in the computers. They are quite popular which can be seen through their high demand.
